Giving a Name to a piece of Artwork

This is my first Pastell on real pastell paper. I love it, but
it is now a whole new medium for me to learn on this sandy paper.

Sometimes we feel as artists to give names to our pieces of artwork. I wonder who started that?
As I have experienced selling artwork in different venues I have always been asked "Whats it called". and I think to myself "It is called ART". and it is "MY ART". But, of course, I dont say that.
However, many galleries want names of your artwork. Perhaps to separate it from the others, or to give it a name to help sell the piece. Names seem to bring out a definition of the piece of artwork when you look at it. It helps to give your eyes and brain a connection and meaning to the piece I think. It can link a humorous intention by the artist through the title of it too. I sometimes create a work of art and decide later what to call it. But then sometimes I create the art with a specific
intention in mind first; thus the name of it, or a series. Like my "War MONGER" series I just started. It is sorta raw artwork, but it uses up alot of my raw materials as is something I am trying to do lately. (clean out the studio!!) I have so many things I have bought from flea markets and such that it is time to create as much artwork now as possible. So, I will be naming away for sure.
Take care.
